THE VANILLA KID BITES THE DUST

The Vanilla Kid wet his pants.

He was sitting in a doorway of an abandoned film company on Santa Monica Boulevard at the east end of town.

The stream of urine cascaded off the step he was huddled on, and trickled in a straight line out onto the sidewalk and toward the curb.

It very likely would’ve made it all the way to the street had it not been for the shoe it encountered on the sidewalk. The shoe was black, and it was sticking out of the pants leg of a very large deputy sheriff, who was scowling, and who had one hand held in front of his chest with one finger waving in a “Come here!” gesture.

Kid’s hand ran frantically to its elbow home, and began to whine, but it was so hysterical that neither Kid nor the deputy could figure out what it was saying.

The deputy made Kid take off his wet pants and underpants before putting him the back seat of the car. Kid was very cold, and his hand shivered as it raved on about something in that tiny little high-pitched voice.
